Symplectic geometry on moduli spaces of J-holomorphic curves

Let (M,\omega) be a symplectic manifold, and Sigma a compact Riemann surface. We define a 2-form on the space of immersed symplectic surfaces in M, and show that the form is closed and non-degenerate, up to reparametrizations. Then we give conditions on a compatible almost complex structure J on (M,\omega) that ensure that the restriction of the form to the moduli space of simple immersed J-holomorphic Sigma-curves in a homology class A in H_2(M,\Z) is a symplectic form, and show applications and examples. In particular, we deduce sufficient conditions for the existence of J-holomorphic Sigma-curves in a given homology class for a generic J.Comment: 16 page

The effect of environmental stochasticity on species richness in neutral communities

Environmental stochasticity is known to be a destabilizing factor, increasing abundance fluctuations and extinction rates of populations. However, the stability of a community may benefit from the differential response of species to environmental variations due to the storage effect. This paper provides a systematic and comprehensive discussion of these two contradicting tendencies, using the metacommunity version of the recently proposed time-average neutral model of biodiversity which incorporates environmental stochasticity and demographic noise and allows for extinction and speciation. We show that the incorporation of demographic noise into the model is essential to its applicability, yielding realistic behavior of the system when fitness variations are relatively weak. The dependence of species richness on the strength of environmental stochasticity changes sign when the correlation time of the environmental variations increases. This transition marks the point at which the storage effect no longer succeeds in stabilizing the community

Psicanálise, Clínica e Universidade: Impasses e Possibilidades

This article takes place in the problematic field regarding the inclusion of psychoanalysis in the context of the university, along with its impasses and possibilities. Our position is defined by the question pertaining university’s possible role in the transmission and training in psychoanalysis, based on the effects derived from our experience of clinical practice and supervision as well as institutional debates taken place in a university school clinic. We seek to introduce contributions to this field through a review of conceptual operators and expand a line of dialogue related to our peers' work on the Brazilian context.O presente artigo toma lugar no campo problemático da inserção da psicanálise no contexto universitário, seus impasses e possibilidades. Posicionamo-nos desde uma pergunta pela função possível, talvez eventual, da universidade na transmissão da psicanálise e na formação do analista. Procuramos pensá-la a partir do cenário da prática clínica referida à psicanálise na universidade, tomando como balizas os efeitos recolhidos de nossa experiência de prática e supervisão, bem como debate institucional, em uma clínica-escola vinculada à universidade. Partindo de uma revisão de operadores conceituais que nos permite situar os problemas em jogo, dando espaço ao diálogo com os aportes dados por colegas inseridos no contexto brasileiro, buscamos apontar algumas contribuições para este campo de reflexão

Multiple clinical risks for cannabis users during the COVID-19 pandemic

The pandemic caused by Sars-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has been a great concern for public and mental health systems worldwide. The identification of risk groups is essential for the establishment of preventive and therapeutic strategies, as for substance users. During COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase in the use of psychoactive substances during the lockdown, including cannabis. This commentary reviews relevant findings and discusses scientific evidence on the risks of worse clinical and psychiatric complications due to coronavirus disease COVID-19 in subjects who use cannabis. Although they are not included as a risk group in the health recommendations for that disease, they may have a more vulnerable respiratory system to viral diseases. There are certain similarities between the harmful cardiovascular and respiratory effects of cannabis use and those of smoking. Due to the different modes of smoking, cannabis chemicals are retained in the body for longe and may also contain other toxic substances such as tar, a substance found in tobacco and which has been associated with the development of lung cancer, bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. Therefore, we discuss if individuals who use cannabis regularly might be more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. This population deserves more clinical attention worldwide and this manuscript can help clinicians become more aware of cannabis risks during pandemics and develop specific intervention strategies
